The Land Rover Defender
The Defender that we know and love was effectively introduced in 1983, though the actual Defender name was introduced later on in 1991, when the Discovery was launched. The 110 was introduced first in 1983, with the 90 following a year later. Its history can be traced back to 1948 when the Series 1 was introduced. It took over from the Series 3 with multiple vast improvements, delivering a significantly more capable and refined vehicle. The Defender has been produced in a variety of body styles and sizes, and has become one of the most popular and iconic off-road vehicles in history. It was highly successful from the start and went on to become one of the most iconic and beloved 4x4 vehicles of all time.
Over the years the Defender evolved, though it maintained its core identity, introducing uprated brakes, improved engine and gearbox options, and refreshed interior features. It has been used by military, public, and private entities across the globe, and is famous for its durability, ruggedness, and capability in extreme off-road conditions. In 1993 Land Rover decided it was time to take the Defender to the US after the success of the Range Rover since 1987, they felt it could offer a more upmarket alternative to the popular Jeep Wrangler targeting adventurous buyers. It was eventually discontinued globally in 2016 after 33 years in production, and it’s claimed that more 75% of the Defender’s ever produced are still in action around the world.
This Land Rover
Built on the 4th October 1995 and delivered new to Madrid, Spain. It would stay in Madrid with its first owner, before moving North to live just outside Barcelona with its next two owners. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the climate of Spain is very kind to cars, the dry climate combined with warm temperatures preserves cars especially well.
Starting with a very original 3 owner Defender that had been rigorously maintained throughout its life, the vehicle was subject to a complete cosmetic restoration. It was repainted inside and out in its original colour of Coniston Green. The original spot welds along the side of the vehicle can still be seen. During restoration it was decided to convert the vehicle to a soft top, and it was fitted with a new Heavy Duty hood frame and Sand Canvas hood, both supplied by world renown Exmoor Trim of the UK.
The Defender has been fitted with all new doors, and it was decided to fit new Series style front doors, as found on the earlier Land Rovers. These allow the door tops to be removed completely in the warmer months. The rear door is side opening which makes access to the rear much easier for passengers, and is further helped by the NAS rear step. A swing-away spare wheel carrier has been fitted to take the weight of the wheel off the door.
The vehicle features many NAS (North American Specification) style cues, including the split doors. The door tops have been painted in Satin Black, as you would find on a NAS Defender. A Land Rover sticker has been applied below to the bonnet, as fitted to North American vehicles in place of the more commonly found Defender sticker. The vehicle also features a heavy duty steering guard and bull bar.
The interior is fitted with Denim Twill seats, with a pair in the front, along with a cubby box, and 6 individual side facing seats in the rear. In maintaining the ethos of a beach runner, no carpets or sounding has been fitted in the interior, so the vehicle can be easily rinsed or washed inside.
Mechanically the vehicle is in excellent order, and we have personally driven this vehicle for over 1000km/700 miles since the build was completed. The 300tdi engine and R380 gearbox, this package is legendary in both build quality and reliability, and these both continue to perform very well. The front brakes have been completely rebuilt with new callipers, brake discs and pads, and a new master cylinder has been fitted. One common area of concern on the 300Tdi engine is the rear main oil seal. Due to the age of the vehicle, and to prevent any future issues we have had this replaced and a precautionary measure. A new clutch was fitted at the same time. A new set of Freestyle wheels have been fitted and they have a matching set of BF Goodrich AT tyres. Our preferred All Terrain tyre of choice.
Please note: This Defender is located in Pennsylvania, US.
