The Land Rover Defender

The Defender that we know and love was effectively introduced in 1983, though the actual Defender name was introduced later on in 1991, when the Discovery was launched. The 110 was introduced first in 1983, with the 90 following a year later. Its history can be traced back to 1948 when the Series 1 was introduced. It took over from the Series 3 with multiple vast improvements, delivering a significantly more capable and refined vehicle. The Defender has been produced in a variety of body styles and sizes, and has become one of the most popular and iconic off-road vehicles in history. It was highly successful from the start and went on to become one of the most iconic and beloved 4x4 vehicles of all time.

Over the years the Defender evolved, though it maintained its core identity, introducing uprated brakes, improved engine and gearbox options, and refreshed interior features. It has been used by military, public, and private entities across the globe, and is famous for its durability, ruggedness, and capability in extreme off-road conditions. In 1993 Land Rover decided it was time to take the Defender to the US after the success of the Range Rover since 1987, they felt it could offer a more upmarket alternative to the popular Jeep Wrangler targeting adventurous buyers. It was eventually discontinued globally in 2016 after 33 years in production, and it’s claimed that more 75% of the Defender’s ever produced are still in action around the world.

It’s probably one of the most original, beautifully preserved and well loved vehicles that we’ve ever seen. I don’t think a 30 year old Defender can get any better...

This Land Rover

First registered just outside of Barcelona on the 10th June 1992, this wonderful Defender 90 is finished in Eastnor Green with an Alpine White roof and Cloth Seats.

Whilst the terms like ‘survivor’ and ‘holy grail’ get thrown around today with little care and regard for their actual meaning. The same can’t be said for this vehicle. This is in the truest sense of the word, a reference car. It’s led a very sheltered life in northern Spain, in the hands of its sole owner. Having covered just 38,000km, or around 23,500 miles over 30 years, it was kept in a garage when not in use and it really shows.

Importantly though this vehicle has been in constant use, as displayed by the annual inspection. All vehicles with moving parts, lubricated joints, and rubber bushes really suffer from a lack of use, so it’s reassuring to see that despite its low mileage, it’s always been gently exercised.

The vehicle has original paint throughout, which is in remarkable condition. Living inside has ensured that its exposure to the Spanish sun has been limited. There are wonderful little details throughout, like the marker paint on all the bolt heads showing they’ve not been touched. The marker paint on the front and rear axle’s is even still present, something that has usually been lost very early in its life!

The interior is simply remarkable, it’s in completely original condition with little to no wear on the Grey Cloth seats and benches. It has had genuine factory over-mats fitted from new on top of the original floor mats, and lifting both of these reveals the factory stickers still applied on the floors. Unsurprisingly the footwells, a common problem area, are in immaculate condition with all the original bolts untouched. The original owners said that the rear rarely had people in it, and the rubber mat is still in great condition. The interior has simply been deep cleaned and tidied, a testament to the how it’s been looked after. The headlining was starting to sag, as they all seem to do on Defenders this age, so we decided to reupholster in it in premium cloth.

The vehicle has been fitted with Wolf heavy duty steel wheels, painted to match the body in Eastnor Green, and a new set of Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tyres have been fitted. Not only do these tyres look and perform well in all conditions, but Land Rover themselves fitted them from the factory on the later Defenders. The details are very important to us, so correct 60mm extended wheel studs have been fitted to ensure there is sufficient thread for the wheel nuts, which are now stainless steel, to hold on to.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the engine bay is like a museum! Whilst some parts have naturally been replaced in line with regular maintenance, the vast majority of parts are original and the yellow markings still present on the bolts. Fitted with the venerable 200Tdi engine and LT77 gearbox, this package provides ample performance for real world driving whilst returning good economy with world leading reliability.

As with all our cars, the exterior hardware has been swapped out for stainless steel to prevent any future issues, and unsightly brown drips. We have personally covered just over 1,000km or 600 miles since it’s been in our ownership, and unsurprisingly it performs beautifully. It’s a vehicle that we would love to keep for ourselves, but the British weather and other vehicles would see it get minimal use. So we hope we can find it a good home! The vehicle will be sold fully serviced and inspected with any due maintenance performed.
